Beading Classes at Beaded Lily
About Our Classes: All of the below-described classes will meet at the Beaded Lily bead shop in Florence, Italy. (Via Toscanella, 33r) Classes are taught by store owner and professional jewelry designer Lily Mordà, unless otherwise noted. Lily has owned a bead/jewelry shop for almost twenty years, both here in Italy and in the United States. In this period of time she has taught dozens of students the joys of beading, both in formal classes, and by offering excellent in-shop customer assistance. Lily has designed hundreds of pieces of jewelry which have been sold to clients from all over the world. Her goal is to help students realize their own unique creativity through designing beautiful, functional and durable fashion jewelry. Classes will be taught in English or Italian, or a combination of both, as needed.
*A note for those of you considering visiting from the UK: We have had numerous students tell us that flying Ryan Air (out of Stansted, I believe, flying into Pisa) is so reasonable that it makes even short visits to Florence quite affordable. The airline also offers 8 Euro round-trip bus transportation from Pisa to Florence. Concerning accommodations: We have a number of reasonably priced recommendations located within easy, and charming, walking distance of our studios. If we can be of assistance please don't hesitate to Contact Us.

Students from University programs around Florence often come to us in small groups, wishing to schedule classes around their other scholastic activities. This approach is encouraged, as it enables us to schedule classes at times that are convenient for all concerned, rather than at a fixed time that might be less convenient. If you are part of a group, and would like to schedule a class for a certain time, please enquire either via the Contact Us page, or in person. It is best to schedule all group classes at least five days in advance, but classes scheduled on shorter notice are often possible. Just ask!
Students who are not part of a group may initiate the scheduling of a particular class simply by contacting us. Beaded Lily can then advertise the date of the proposed class in hopes of recruiting other interested students, both in-store and on our website. If no other students are found, the student who initiated the scheduling of that particular class will have the option of taking it privately at the private rate (see above). If you would like to initiate the scheduling of a class, please do so at least 10 days in advance, so that we will have the opportunity to find others to join the class.
Students wishing to schedule a private class should contact us at least five days prior to their desired class time.
The following classes are now available for student registration. Other classes may be added or discontinued as student demand warrants. Check our website for updates.
*Each class includes a short lecture on the materials and techniques that will be employed within the class. The remainder of the class will consist of hands-on instruction. In most of the classes listed below, students will leave the class with at least one finished, ready-to-wear piece of jewelry, unless otherwise noted.
|1.||Basic Bead Stringing: Learn the RIGHT way to string and professionally finish beautiful, durable and comfortable to wear designer necklaces and bracelets. Students will learn about the different stringing materials available, and learn how to properly finish their pieces for maximum durability and comfort. Creating multi-strand necklaces and bracelets will also be explored at students’ request.|
|2.||Creating Pendants and Earrings: Learn essential wire-working techniques to create your own unique pendants and earrings. Students will also learn how to use the beautiful and versatile Italian Wire Mesh Ribbon to compliment the pendant(s) created in class. This class will give students a good foundation in basic wire-working techniques, which will surely be used again and again in future jewelry-making projects. Students will leave the class with a finished pendant necklace and matching dangle earrings.|
|3.||Pearl Knotting: Students will learn to knot between pearls or semi-precious stone beads strung on silk-cord, using a simple tool called a “knotting awl.” This is a classic time-honored technique that any designer, whether she be amateur or professional, would surely want to add to her repertoire. Depending on the length of each student’s necklace, and how quickly students learn the knotting technique, projects may or may not be completed by the end of class.|
|4.||Advanced Techniques - The Joy of Bead-weaving (off-loom): There are a myriad of hand bead-weaving techniques available using seed beads and thread to create stunning one-of-a-kind beaded pieces. Students will be introduced to Japanese Delica seed beads, which are designed especially for bead-weaving, as well as a host of other materials. Each class will consist of two 2 ½ hour sessions. Students will be expected to work on their projects at home between sessions. Classes will be taught utilizing three different classic bead-weaving stitches: The Peyote stitch - The Brick stitch - The Spiral Rope stitch|
